Frustration at Meeting

A recent hearing at the Planning Board ended in anger and frustration, with the applicants for a special permit continuing their hearing to the next meeting on just an hour’s notice. The residents of 15 Given Drive have been renting spare rooms in their home to help pay for a resident’s medical treatments, but had been doing so without acquiring a special permit to rent rooms in a residential house from the town. The applicants sought a continuance before the August 21st meeting, but the lateness of the request meant that the abutters who were in attendance to voice their opinions were told of the continuance at the meeting, sparking frustration from several of them. The abutters believe that if granted, the permit would cause more traffic and disruptions in their neighborhood. Planning Board Chair Jack Kelly expressed his sympathies with the angered abutters while also saying that the applicants did have a right to seek the continuance. Members of the board then discussed possible changes to application regulations that would require applicants to announce continuations well before the day of the meeting.
