Lahey Reps Discuss ER Expansion

By: BNEWS Weekly

Representatives from Lahey Health & Medical Center were before the Board of Selectmen this week to discuss the hospital’s Emergency Room expansion.  Lahey is planning a major build-out from 12,000 to 45,000 square feet along with a host of upgrades.

The ER is the third phase of a master plan approved by Town Meeting in 2003 and 2004.  The completed phases the addition of the Southeast wing and the parking garage.  Lahey reps explained the renovations are in keeping with the changing health care needs of the region and Lahey becoming a renowned institution of critical care.  The modern design of the new ER will include 36 treatment bays, 4 trauma rooms and 6 observation rooms as well as a heli-pad with elevator and a foundation to accommodate a future Radiation Oncology Center.

Lahey hopes to earn a Level 1 Trauma Designation once the ER is complete.  Lahey Health has submitted an Application of Determination of Need to the state as part of the regulatory process and is working with state officials to move the ER expansion forward.
