Moratorium on Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Approved

By: BNEWS Weekly

Town Meeting approved a moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries in Burlington by unanimous vote.  The suspension, brought forth by the Planning Department, would prohibit any application for a marijuana dispensary until June 30th of 2014.  The legalization of medical marijuana passed in the November election.

Planning Director Kristen Kassner informed the assembly the moratorium gives the town time to come up with regulations and gives the State Department of Public Health time to provide its regulations and recommendations.  Mrs. Kassner explained that the suspension was selected as a course of action as opposed to an outright prohibition because prohibitions have been successfully challenged in Massachusetts as happened with adult entertainment.
