Water Main Break Closes Intersection for a Day

By: Rich Hosford

A water main break closed down an intersection for a day and caused some residents to go without water.

The break was under the road at the intersection of Skilton Lane and Mill Street. Burlington police say it was first reported at about 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Fixing it required a five-foot deep hole be dug to get to the 12-inch main line and the work was completed at about 7:30 p.m.

Department of Public Works Director John Sanchez said the crew worked hard all day to fix the main, siphon out the water and get the road back together.

The break was at a valve used to stop the flow of water, Sanchez explained. He suspected the bolts, which were old, gave way. During the leak water was both pouring into the street and seeping underground into the drains.
