West Nile Virus Found In Burlington Mosquitoes

By: BNEWS Weekly

West Nile Virus has been found in mosquitoes in Burlington. As a pre-caution, the Board of Health is requesting that residents remove any standing water from their yards. Water in things such as wading pools and birdbaths should be frequently changed, as it only takes a week for mosquito larvae to develop in water. Additionally, residents are advised to take action to protect themselves against mosquito bites, such as wearing insect repellent and having screens in open doors and windows.

West Nile Virus can infect anyone, but people over the age of fifty are at a greater risk for severe disease. The virus usually has no symptoms, although it can sometimes develop into flu-like symptoms or a more severe illness.

If residents have any questions about the disease, they are advised to call East Middlesex Mosquito Control at 781-899-5730, or the Burlington Board of Health at 781-270-1955.
