Detached Wheel Crosses Route 128 Barrier, Kills Northbound Driver

Police are investigating an accident that left one driver dead on Route 128/95 in Lexington near the Burlington line on Tuesday.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, at approximately 1:15 p.m., state troopers responded to a report of a vehicle that had been struck by a wheel on Route 95 northbound near Exit 31. Responding troopers determined that the wheel had come loose from a Dodge Ram pickup truck that was traveling southbound and that it had crossed the median, striking the northbound car. First responders found the driver of the northbound vehicle deceased at the scene.

“Preliminary investigation by Trooper Brian Williams indicates that the 1997 Dodge RAM pickup was traveling southbound when its left rear wheel came off the rear axle,” state police said in a statement. “The wheel flew over the Jersey barrier median, bounced off one northbound vehicle, and then struck a second northbound vehicle, a sedan operated by an adult male. The tire impacted that vehicle in the area of the windshield and roof. The disabled Dodge RAM came to a stop in the southbound left lane, just south of Exit 31.”

Police have not released the identity of the deceased driver as of the publishing of this article. They said the investigation indicates the RAM was being operated by a 19-year-old woman.
