Flood Watch In Effect Through Thursday

By: Rich Hosford

People in New England have been asking for rain after a bit of a dry spell but this week we may get more than we bargained for.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch that will go into effect at late Tuesday night and end Thursday morning. The watch covers portions of Connecticut and Massachusetts, including Middlesex County.

According to the NWS, heavy rainfall is expected to start Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning and continue until Thursday. Rainfall could exceed an inch per hour at times and a total of two to four inches is possible with even more in bands of heavy rain. Thunderstorms are also possible on Wednesday.

Flooding of urban areas with poor drainage and low-lying areas is the biggest threat, the flood watch notification states. Also smaller rivers and streams could also be susceptible to flooding due to rapid runoff from heavy rains.

The NWS says people should monitor forecasts and those who live in areas prone to flooding should take precautions.
