Free White Goods & CRT Collection Ending July 1

By: Rich Hosford

Starting next month Burlington residents will no longer be able to place certain waste items on the curb for free pick-up.

On Monday, the Board of Selectmen voted to eliminate the free White Goods & CRT Collection. White Goods include items like appliances, including stoves, air conditioners, refrigerators, small electronics including microwaves as well as large metal objects like swing sets, lawn mowers, exercise equipment and boilers. CTR items are objects such as television sets and computer monitors.

Bulk items such as tables, couches, chairs and mattresses can still be discarded for free.

DPW John Sanchez said the change is meant to to keep the town’s Town's Trash & Recycle costs within a reasonable level.

“Recycling has become more expensive so I’m recommending to eliminate the free pick-up services for White Goods and electronics like televisions and monitors,” he told the Board of Selectmen on Monday. “That service is costing the town $100,000 per year.”

The board voted to approve the change and the elimination of the free White Good/CRT pick-up will go into effect on July 1.

Sanchez said the town has worked with Republic Services, a company that pick-ups bulk items. Residents can have items picked up at the prices listed in the chart below. Residents can also seek any vendor that provides this service and make their own arrangements.
