Parents Raise Concerns After Report of Bus Stop Assault

By: Rich Hosford

A couple parents also came to the School Committee meeting to raise concerns over a recent incident at Marshall Simonds Middle School that they said has not been properly addressed.

According to a note to parents sent out by Superintendent Conti, on Tuesday, June 18, there was a report of an alleged assault on students by two other students at a bus stop. In the letter Conti said he is aware that this was not an isolated incident and that he has opened up an investigation with the school resource officer at the Burlington Police Department.

The two offenders, both middle school boys, have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Jennifer Hickey, a parent of a middle school student, said she had heard of several incidents of bullying and assault at the school and thought the administration was not doing enough to address the problem. Hickey gave the committee a list of other alleged incidents.

School Committee Chair Christine Monaco said there is nothing more important to the school committee than the safety of the students and that they will look into the situation. She said both at the meeting and in an interview afterwards that Burlington schools have a zero-tolerance policy on bullying and violent behavior and that they will ensure that policy is enforced.
