Police Offering Self-Defense and Personal Safety Training Program for Seniors

The Burlington Police Department is offering free classes to help seniors learn how to protect themselves against both fraud and abuse. 


The program, RAD For Seniors, is a is a crime prevention and self-defense program designed specifically for seniors aged 60 and up. It consists of 15 hours of lessons offered over 10 sessions. Classes will run for five weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. starting on Tuesday, October 20 and ending on Thursday, November 19. All classes will be held at the Burlington Council on Aging at 61 Center Street. 


According to police, Between 1 and 2 million Americans age 65 or older have been injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection. On top of that, only one in 14 incidents of abuse or neglect get reported to authorities. 


When it comes to financial scams or theft, at least 5 million elderly are financial abuse victims each year.
