Popular Local Ice Cream Shop Coming to Burlington

By: Rich Hosford

Ice cream lovers rejoice, a popular Bedford establishment catering to your frozen needs has been given the go-ahead to set up shop in Burlington.

Bedford Farms Ice Cream was granted a special permit by the Burlington Planning Board on Thursday night to build an 1,100 square feet location at 19 Third Avenue. The new ice cream spot will join the other restaurants and shops at the 3rd Ave. development project.

The Burlington establishment will be Bedford Farm’s third location. It currently has shops in Bedford and Concord.

The Burlington location will have the same menu as the other locations, which includes a wide variety of ice cream, including seasonal flavors, as well as cakes and pies, both which can be custom made.

The shop will be a walk-in design and will have some indoor seating as well as a couple of places to eat outdoors. Todd Freemont-Smith of Nordblom Company, which owns the park, said there will also be outdoor seating installed by 3rd Ave. that people can use.

The members of the Planning Board were enthusiastic about the new restaurant. One concern was that trash containers outside the shop will fill with cups and papers laden with ice cream and thus attract bees. Freemont-Smith said his company will maintain the outdoor trash bins and will work to ensure they are cleaned regularly to combat this issue.

Bedford Farms has a long history. It was established in 1880 by the J.B. Prescott Company and started making ice cream in the 1940s.

The plan is for the restaurant to be open by the end of the summer. Not great timing for ice cream but who doesn’t like a nice cone in the fall?
