Special Olympics Softball in Burlington This Saturday

By: Rich Hosford

Come out and enjoy a morning of softball and support a group of athletes that will inspire you.

The Burlington Recreation Department and Burlington Rotary are hosting a Special Olympics softball tournament this weekend from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Human Services Building at 61 Center Street.

Selectman Bob Hogan, who is a Rotary member, encouraged people to come and cheer on the athletes during the board meeting last week.

“I highly recommend people come by and watch the athletes,” he said. “It is a big deal for them to have people come and support them.”

The mission of Special Olympics, founded in 1968, is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
