Fire officials believe they have determined the cause of a Burlington Street house fire that crews knocked down Monday afternoon.

According to Burlington Fire Department Assistant Chief Michael Patterson, at 3:37 p.m. on Monday the department received a call of a possible house fire on Burlington Streets. The Command Car, Engines 1, 2 and 3 and the tower responded to the location. A Woburn engine that was in the area investigating an odor of smoke also responded.

Patterson said the fire started in the basement and spread to the main floor on the right-front of the house. Crews were able to knock down the flames in about an hour and then spent time ensuring there was no lingering danger in the walls. Firefighters also cut vents in the roof to let heat escape because there was concern the fire head spread to the attic.

The State Fire Marshal’s office also responded, Patterson said, and at this time officials believe the cause of the fire was a problem with electrical wiring.

Nobody was injured though one woman was in the home in an in-laws suite. She smelled smoke and investigated the basement. A Burlington police officer who lives in the area also saw the smoke and went to the house and escorted the woman outside.
